By function, Lingang can be divided into 5 major sub-zones, namely Urban Area, Equipment Zone, Compound Zone Industrial Zone and Fengxian Zone.
Covering a total area of 68 sq. km, the Urban Area is also called New Nanhui City or Aqua Lake Town. The land of the Urban Area is totally reclaimed from the sea and built around the man-made Aqua Lake. The Aqua Lake is a pure round lake, covering a total area of 5.6 sq. km. Nanhui New City aims to become an international city, focusing on finance, trade, commerce, convention and exhibition, education, R&D and tourism.
Facing the sea, Nanhui New City creates a natural landscape that one can hardly have in the downtown area of Shanghai with its abundant natural resources such as marshland, forest, and ocean. The biodiversity is delicately preserved and air quality saved by its coastal location and dense greeneries. The air quality index PM2.5 of Lingang Area maintains 10-20, making Lingang as competitive as most western cities of clean air in terms of air quality.
New Nanhui City is also a global tourist destination. Forest Park, Flower Port, and the Aqua Lake have made New Nanhui City a garden of Lingang and also possibly the most ideal home for professionals of all occupations.
As an area undertaking the national mission of developing a group of emerging industries that are strategically important to China, Lingang is also home to a variety of technology-intensive industries including new energy, power equipment, large ship equipment, automobile and parts, offshore engineering, logistics engineering, construction equipment, civil aviation equipment as well as equipment remanufacturing. The total area is 65 sq. km. Currently, clusters that congregate leading companies, many of which are on the Fortune Global 500 list, from both home and abroad have already shaped in the Heavy Equipment Manufacturing Zone.
Shanghai Automobile Industry Corporation, or SAIC, has allocated the manufacturing of its two brands of Morris Garage and Roewe in the Zone. Shanghai Electric and SIEMENS are working on new energy equipment including nuclear power equipment and wind mill spades. CSSC-MES and VOLVO are working on ship engine development while Kalmar is making port machines. The Zone is also home to remanufacturing leaders including Caterpillar.
The 41-km2 Compound Zone is a sub-area mixing industries and urban facilities. The major industries include light manufacturing and services to producers and industrial focus will be laid on telecommunication, information technology, photoelectron, electromechanical equipment, civil- aviation-related and so on.
The Logistics Zone covers a total area of 16 km2, as a sub-area adjacent to the onshore part of the Yangshan Section of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, the Logistics Zone aims to become a world-class logistics terminal for the coordinated development of port logistics, logistics services for industries and special-need logistics.
Accounting for nearly 1/3 of the total Lingang Area, the Greater Industrial Zone is 108 km2 large. It will function as an extended area of the current Heavy Equipment Manufacturing Zone as well as a new major concentrated area for Emerging Industries of Strategic Importance such as civil aviation and new energy as well as services to producers.
Located in Fengxian District of Shanghai, the Fengxian Zone is a planned sub-area in Lingang of 17 km2. It is geographically included in Lingang Area and enjoys the same promotional policies as applied in other sub-areas, but it is, in practice, operated as a relatively self-growing sub-area. Its target is to become a comprehensive and self-operating industrial cluster and city in which the type of industries will correspond to what are developed in its adjacent Heavy Equipment Zone, or high-end manufacturing, new energy, logistics and trade as well as commercial services.
